Richard Scott Blog: 4th December 2022

Sunday night we had a good long video chat with my mom and dad and then I called my sister Angela. they all live in Darlington in the North or England. It was nice to catch up and have a good laugh.

Monday was unbelievable. Up early at 5.30am and go go go. Coffee and then saw Joanne off and I got all my payments for month end done and even had time for filing and printing all my receipts and then more time for a studio tour with David and his dad and Sabine. It was so refreshing to have potential collectors come over for studio tours again. It was like in the heyday before COVID. Back then I would do a studio tour 3 times a week. It was like a mad house but always good to turn apprehensive people into disciples with my magic. The key is transparency. Give and you will get.

I use a wonderful analogy. I say to people, if you want to make bread you need 7 ingredients: Flour, sugar, yeast, water, salt, heat and time. Anyone can mix those together and make bread. But if you add passion you can make bread like Jason at Jason’s Bakery and make money from it. The same goes with art.

Meet David. He saw my art in Carl’s house and was so fascinated he came to see me and asked for a tour.

Me doing what I do best. Sharing the recipe. Martin must of broke a few glasses in the shops as a kid with his hands behind his back. 🙂

After all this, I had a quick bite to eat and bought a new YOCO machine for the Plett Pop Up in December and thrn headed out to hit 100 golf balls at the driving range. Joanne took Chad to IMM Graduate School in Stellenbosch to meet with the headmistress to help him choose his subjects for his second semester for his BCOMM degree he is studying part-time.

Angelique sold another Eye Candy print, which was awesome. I ended up printing it 4 times because we scuffed it twice and the pencil point broke while singing the 3rd attempt. I booked it down to manic Mondays.

Hout Bay sold another piece and we made R30k on the shop over the weekend. So we were go go go Monday. The temperature got into the 35Deg+ and even the air was filled with insects and lots of lady birds. I had to save them and scoop them out the pool every 30 minutes there were so many.

I decided to go hit 100 balls at the Golf range. Vernon was there so he gave me another lesson while I was there. I’m learning to transfer the power to the left foot now. All these years I thought I could play golf.

I was messing about with some filters on Instagram Monday morning. I was playing with the saturation as this Ultramarine Blue is such a brilliant colour.

Henry from You and I gallery in Sea Point called me up on Sunday and asked if I could do a one off piece for a very special client. His wife’s name is Mandy and she is one of the girls in the My Girl series. I titled it Randy Mandy, as requested. You can figure out the rest.

Just when I thought my working day was over John from Hout Bay Gallery popped in to say hi and pic up some Xanita white board from me. We had a coffee and caught up. John concurred that the season is picking up and there seems to be a nice influx of tourists. Always good to see John.

The man that believed/believes in me and gave me a platform to be myself. Thanks John.

It was late when Joanne got home as she was in Stellenbosch for the afternoon. We quickly sliced up the left over roast chicken and added in the pickled cabbage and scoffed it down while watching the sun set.

Not sure why this pic came out so blurry. But you get the drift.

Tuesday I was up early and off to the shop. I had a jam packed day. 8am Nicola to discuss the new beach bags. Deon Bing at 10am to do our Vlog. Selwyn at 11 to catch up on the Plett POP-UP shop. 12 pm with Achim. and 2pm with Daniel and Bianca from Carpe Diem Lodge.

The Beach bag meeting with Nicola went well. I touched up the artwork and at the same time ordered another 8 pool cushions for the Plett POP UP.

Then Deon popped in and we did a 30 minite unedited video that will be posted on our YouTube channels monthly. We will use the platform to generate good content over time. Neither of us use YouTube to our benefit. Well now is the time. Watch this space.

After Deon, or shall I say during our rap-up, Selwyn popped in for a quick catch up RE Plett POP up and as usual it was good to see him. He had a taste of Tequila and was out the shop with two fully loaded bags of goods from the shop. I think I need to make Selwyn my MD.

Selwyn left and Angelique and I had a quick catch up. Chad was packing about 5 parcels for delivery, I only managed to grab one and draw on it. This was so great to see. It made me realise the gallery was the right choice.

The famous Deon Bing and myself catching up and sharing our experiences

Before I knew it Achim rocked up for a catch up and a lunch. Achim and I go back 11 years when John introduced us and he bought like 20+ paintings and shipped them to Bavaria and the rest is History. Achim is challenging, but one of them good challenges. I remember negotiating with him in one minute and then after the deal is done, we friends. Such a unique trait to have.

We shared a hamburger cut in half and a plate of chips and reminisced about all our great times in Furth im Wald, where he lives in Bavaria near the Czechoslovakian border. We traded art for very expensive HI-Fi equipment. Achim is the guy I traded a small painting for the 2002 Ducati 999 I got for Richie. Achim said before I upload the blog he will send me a pic of us two 11 years ago.

After catching up with Achim, Chad sold him a beach bag and 6 key rings. I headed out to pic up Joanne and have a light, 2nd lunch, with Daniel from Carpe Diem Lodge in Greenpoint. Always great to catch up with good friends who are clients. We spoke a little business, as Daniel wants a piece for his Guest House, and then we shared some prawns and Calamari from the menu of GRAND BEACH in the Waterfront.

We drove home and Joanne got stuck into some ironing and I quickly finished off the Candy Ana My Girls for the Art Box.

I poured myself a nice glass of Richard Scott Spider Pig Rose and am typing this to you on Tuesday night around 19H21. Joanne is having quick power nap and I’m in overdrive after such a powerful and successful Tuesday day. The crows have become ever more visible in the skies over Melkbos which is great news as they chase away the Sky Rats.

Wednesday, I woke up feeling great. I searched for about an hour for accommodation for Chad in Plett for the POP UP we are having there 15 December to 24th December. Depending on the demand we will take it through to 4th January. Its quite strange how different platforms like Booking.com and AirBnB and Hotels.com all have different rates, and quite different. So I found him a nice little room up on the hill that will make him feel like home. After that I did my usual Wednesday banking and admin. We had to make up a small white box for a client. I took the time to enter the NSRI “Win a Car”. You donate R800 and have a one in 36000 chance to win a fancy car. I don’t think it’s about wining the car but more like donating to a good cause. Either way both parties win.

Phillip Rowel ran an Auction on Wednesday of these two beautiful pieces from way back in 2003. I can vividly remember painting them when I lived in Agulhas for a year. I absolutely loved painting them and even Brett Kebble, unbeknown to me, had a few of these in his collection. Phillip has extended the auction. Click on the link below once you’ve finished reading the blog.

Wednesday afternoon, I popped out and hit a few buckets of balls. I played horrendously but I am still trying to undo the mess I created in my childhood. There is still a lot of work to be done. I managed to pick up a few nice 2nd hand Callaway wedges of Facebook Marketplace. At the same time I sold the Pinball machine in the shop. I was contemplating painting it, but it feel like I would be painting over someone else’s art. I wonder if they still make them form scratch. I must ask Freddie whose from pinballmachines.co.za who serviced my one.

I also want to put that huge ship mast up for sale this week. It’s the one I swapped out with Bevan at the Biscuit Mill way back before COVID with a construction piece he liked.

FOR SALE. My 1960’ties Fishing Boat shipping mast.

Joanne come home a little late as she popped into the tailors to fix some Jeans and zip’s. She said that Dischem in Bayside had closed down. I wonder why?

We had a nice early light salad. I had to take Richie and Victoire to the Airport. They are off to Mauritius for 6 weeks, as mentioned before.

When we picked up the kids to take them to the airport, Joanne and I had a disagreement about how I packed the suit cases into the boot of the car (or rather forced them). End off year stress stuff. We both stepped out of the drama circle and headed to the airport. Then while driving to the airport some kid threw a rock at the car, while WAZE took us through a rough area. Phuckit.

Bon Voyage, quite fitting as there going to Mauritius. Do you get it?

A new collector of my art, Luke, sent me a picture of the piece hanging in his space. I thought it was so cool that he had put the small Richard Scott figurines on his table. It so reminded me of been part of STAR WARS or LEGO. Imagine one day.

Loving the white frame.

Friday, I was at the shop and Henry from You and I Art Gallery, popped in to collect some art. He even bought 4 Graffiti cans and I got him on camera stuffing them into his pockets.

The man himself Henry

Friday afternoon I went to oversea a installation of a recent commission I did for a collector in Cape Town. I took the liberty of taking some pictures of her Richard Scott Shrine house 🙂

What an awesome piece and so well displayed

After the catch up Joanne and I decide to treat ourselves to a nice lunch at Melkbos Kitchen in Melkbos to celebrate the week and our love for each other.

Saturday, there were no kids in the house so we slept in a little late. Like 8am. By 9am Joanne and I had done a 5km beach run, eaten a nice warm breakfast and were watching the Russel Kaplan Live Auction. They were running rather slow so we decided to pop out to Pick n’ Pay and Postnet to run some errands and then back home.

Late afternoon we were both very lazy and I was supposed to go hit some golf balls and Joanne wanted to go the Melkbos local market. We looked at each other and went NAAAAAA lets stay home and chill.

As I type this it is still Saturday and we’ve been watching the Russel Kaplan Auction afternoon and me typing this blog.

Dean finished his matric exams and decided to pay his way. YEAH. He got himself a job at a local restaurant called Happy Folks in Big Bay and we decided to go support him and go eat at the restaurant. We invited the kids and Chad and Daniella agreed to come. Dean decided to pay the bill and treat us. It’s nice when your kids buy you a meal.

Me signing the POSTNET electronic slip. Sell it on Auction I told Christo at POSTNET

Sunday morning we went for an early beach run and decided to make some pickled fish and pickled vegetables as Joanne scoffed the last batch made.

Today, Sunday 4th December I am Auctioning off this board to help John at Woodstock Brewery raise funds for his Church to take 20 Elders for a nice breakfast. Go to Facebook or Instagram and search for the post and get your bids in before 6pm. As I type this its sitting on R1500.

Help me help others.
The person who bids the most in the comments below the Instagram post wins this graffiti board. Even Joanne is bidding as she knows how much it’s worth.
Proceeds go to Sharon AOG Church in Steenberg for Breakfast for 20 seniors.
One went on auction recently for R9600.
Ends 6pm today Sunday.

Its Sunday afternoon and some of the kids are coming over for Sunday Lunch. Joanne is in the kitchen making yummy vegetables. I just got the fire going to do the rack of lamb.

Art Box. worth R5 500 for only R2 500

This is your last chance to get your December art box for Christmas. Here’s the link: CLICK HERE
