Richard Scott Blog: 30th April 2023

Most of last Sunday afternoon Joanne and I planned our Paris trip in September. Were looking for experiences. We've found a nice young couple that will take us on a day experiencing the sights and museums and the next day a foodie trip.

It's a great way to experience a city by asking a local to help.

Sunday evening was awesome as Joanne and I binge watched Netflix and then went to bed at 8pm falling asleep to the rain. It rained all night and into Monday morning. We woke up late but managed to scramble and get out the door on time. Joanne headed to the office and I started my check list. Kids OK? check. Joanne OK ? Check. Staff ok and given weekly instructions? Check. Bank accounts OK? Check. Emails all done and up to date? Check. Coffee? Check.

So here I am Monday morning at 6.45am typing this because the last few weeks I got caught out and only ended up doing the weekly blog on Sunday. I'm not sure where you are on a rainy Monday morning, but I'm showered and caffeinated up and it's go go go.

We also have a short week this week as Thursday is Freedom Day in South Africa. If you take one days leave you get 5 days off as Monday is also a public holiday. International Workers Day.

I posted a pic of me and my front door on IG Monday. Thought I'd share it with you.

I also posted this random studio shot of the Aluminum Stencils I use in my studio and a follower/collector saw the post and wants to buy them as a work of art.

I also had some collectors pop into the studio for a studio tour. They were so intrigued, they stayed for two hours.

Richard and Pieter and their partners and artwork.

I love showing people my process. I must get that AirBnB experience going again.

I also got stuck into some studio odds and sods on Monday. I knew it was gonna be a crazy week. Here's a few pictures of the rest of my day.

Tuesday I popped into the shop and had a really good sales strategy meeting with Angelique and Chad. Were gonna push the POP-UP shop concept. We even looked at shopping centers and cruise liners as an option. I will keep you updated on this one. After our meeting Angelique and I popped out to go see Henry's new spot in Sea Point that he is opening soon. I popped into the SPAR and got Joanne and I some Kosher sesame seed fish and some fresh humus for lunch later. We had time to pop in and see Henry at his Kloofnek gallery before heading back to fetvh Joanne. She had an afternoon appointment for her Shengen Visa for our Paris trip in September. Then it was home, clean up, go for a quick 2.5km road run, eat dinner, talk Paris and early to bed.

Wednesday was like a Friday as South Africa was having a 5 day holiday starting with Thursday been the 27th April and Freedom Day. So I decided to go to Hermanus with Angelique to go visit Jozua and have a cup of tea with him and discuss the REFLECTION exhibition. The roads were crazy busy with trucks and more trucks. Nonetheless, Angelique got us there safely and we caught up with Jozua. Its always great to see him. He is one of a handful of people instrumental in the success of my art career. We go back 22 years and Jozua is still doing what he does best.
It was was weird driving through the Grabouw area as many years ago I rode all the fields and mountains on my bike in my Mountain bike days. 3 ABSA Cape Epics and 5 Wines to Wales later and to think I haven't been on a bicycle for 6 years.

Every once in a while, like every 5 years I treat myself to a Wimpy Egg and Bacon sanwidch and a Wimpy coffee. I don't feel guilty as I once remember Bertus Basson saying he love Spur burgers.

Jozua is so ahead of his game, even in the Social Media Space.

Love chatting to this man.

Jozua loves the new concept. Watch this space.

After catching up with Jozua, Angelique and I headed back to Cape Town and the rest of the day was a blurr. I remember Peregrine pies, a quick Sushi lunch with Joanne at a Japanese restaurant we found in Century City, then having a wart lazered off my finger and then back home to drop off groceries and then off to Angelina's school for the Matric Variety Concert at 5.30 and then back home to fall down on the couch for an hour before bed. You know the drill.

These kids are to clever. Loved the show. Great to see the freedom given to them by the school.

Thursday was Freedom day and it reminded me of the painting I did of Desmond Tutu voting on that day in 1994. Here's a photo of the painting.

We got up early Thursday and headed to Clay Cafe in Hout Bay to celebrate Dean's 19th Birthday. We picked Angelina up and were off via Camps Bay to take the scenic drive. I was a little apprehensive at first but they truly run a proper operation. I can highly recommend it. It was jam packed and they run like a Swiss watch. I followed Joanne's lead and decided to make something practical. I chose a cheese plate and did a Richard Scott on it.

I was also attracted to the orange/lemon squeezer as when Joanne moved in with me she literally got rid of everything except a few things her dad left her. One of the things she unpacked out of her box was a glass lemon squeezer, and every time I use it I get so terrified I drop it. So now I can use the one I made at Clay Cafe.

Chad told the waiter to cut that out and frame it. LOL

After we ate and finished we headed back home and had a quick Happy Birthday sing song to Dean and a slice of the best Chocolate cake I've every had. It was a gift to Dean from Joanne's boss Craig and his husband Juan. His sister Tracy from A Taste of Klass made it as she is a baker.

The kids left as they do, and Joanne and I settled into enjoying the public holiday on the couch in front of the fire. We had the left over chicken that I cooked up the night before. Joanne had it in a wrap and I made a nice big lettuce, tomato, and raw onion sandwich on some Ciabatta bread that I bought at Perigreen on the way back from Hermanus on Thursday.

Both Joanne and I couldn't keep our eyes open and were in bed by 8pm. We both had two long days driving and working hard as we squeezed 5 days work into three, due to all the holidays.

Friday morning we only woke up at 8am after a good night sleep and by 9am we were both on our laptops. Blah.

Joanne went for a run on the road as I had a sore throat and thick head since Wednesday. After that we ran a few errands at the Bank etc and bought a few items from the Chinese shop as we wanted to do a Chinese themed Sunday lunch for the kids. Will send pics of the food and items we bought. We both decided to google some recipes. I was suggesting Beef Chow Main and Sweet and Sour Chicken, Keep it simple with the kids. But lets see what we get from the Chinese shop. News to follow.

China Town here we come

Quick Cottail before i treated Joanne to a 90min full body Thai massarge. I forgot how good they are for you.

During the week I was cleaning out some old boxes to throw away business documents older than 5 years and I stumbled across some old photos of me during the years. I thought I would post one each week and tell you the story behind it. So here is one of me at about 5 years old in a town called Eastvale near Springs in Johannesburg. In the background is the building my dad built with Uncle Stan. It's where I learnt how to mix cement and use a wheel barrow. I remember going to a school called Pinegrove Primary.

Saturday I woke up bored. For someone like me to sit and do nothing for 5 days was tough. So I said to Joanne "lets go for a drive and see where the road takes us." We ended at Bertus Bassons new restaurant, Clara's Barn in Somerset West. I treated Joanne to a delicious lunch prepared by Chef Drikus Brink.

Sunday we got out of bed at 10am. Whoaaaa. We went for a beach run then it was preparing the Chinese Sunday lunch we promised ourselves we would do for the kids. Well 4 hours later it was a huge success and even Chad, who spent 2 months in China said he was impressed. All the kids ate all the food, even the wanton soup starter and Angelina said it was like a real Chinese restaurant. We did Beef Chow Main with rice noodles and the ever popular with the kids, sweet and sour Chicken.

We bought an assortment of desserts and Chinese cold drinks that went down well. Joanne even bought the 3xHOT noodles and most of us had a go after Joanne set the record by having more than 1 noodle - she was crying it was so hot. LOL

Full house. Yeah.

Until next week, have a fab Monday and rest of the week.
