Richard Scott Blog - 22nd December 2024

Monday was a public holiday in South Africa, so we decided to use it as a kinda pre-end of year one day break. LOL. All the staff were on leave so there was not much happening in the studio, but lots on the sales front.

Sunday afternoon backgammon and sunsets.

Perfecting my Margarita skills.

Tuesday, Joanne was supposed to go in to work for her last day, but she fell ill, so she worked from home. The day, as per this whole week was a bit of a blur. We got Solly in to do the carpets. Joanne arranged all that while I did a “Tick the box off” run around town. From collecting wine for the Thursday show in Plett, to popping into Woodstock brewery to collect some beer to Clicks to get some needed items for the house before the mad Christmas rush. I got home and Joanne made us a delicious supper.

With Sean the framer, picking up Suzy Lubner's newly acquired piece.

Solly and his team working their magic.

Wednesday we woke up to the first day of our holiday. Yeah right. Joanne got stuck into her work and so did I. Admin, emails and 4 hours later we were still at it.

I managed to put some final pieces together for the Plett Talk on Thursday. Joanne helped me.

Gold stencils off to Plett.

Also, this beautiful 1m x 1m Ultramarine blue tree.

The most popular of my works; Candy Ana.

I am not sure why, but this week I only took a few photos. I will let you know why. Blah.

Thursday morning early, Joanne and I were in the car and off to Plett a 7 hour drive. I had a talk at Milkwood Gallery the same evening. I actually don’t mind driving. I am one of those people who enjoy driving. I would enjoy it more if I was in a Lamborghini where you can overtake 10 cars, in the space one. But, once again and my uncle Stuart would say “HEY HO.”

We arrived in Plett at around 1 and dropped off all the art at Milkwood Gallery.

We checked into our AirBnB. Huh. Strange how the photos on AirBnB are not real.

Joanne and I made a conscientious decision to double read the reviews and even message the host. Although I don’t think you can.

Anyway, the accommodation was nice and modern but were right next to a Taxi rank and dilapidated building. We made the best of it.

We wondered into The Grand for some sushi and margaritas.

I wondered down to the gallery about 5pm. I bought some ice, and we were off.

I had a scheduled talk at 7pm, but weirdly enough, people came and had a glass of Colmant bubbly and then left. In the space of 3 hrs about 30 people came and left like a train station, so I did not even get time to talk.

Brett Archibald and his wife Anita came to the show.

Nonetheless, as openings and exhibitions go, you are there to network and make contacts for the future. Strangely enough we made more sales the next day.

We raised R5000 for John and the elderly annual lunch at The Sharon Church. Thank you Camila for you final winning bid.

Friday morning, we woke up in our Taxi rank and packed our bags and we were off to our POD in the Plett mountains, Believe it or not, 15 minutes from the taxi rank.

2hr walk on the beach.

Coffee with the ever so happy and giving Suzy.

Spectacular view.

Our home for 2 days. Car keys in the top drawer.

Pano of our walk to the cliff tops.

We had a nice coffee catch up with Suzi Lubner, the founder of her organisation “Sabrina Love”

Always good to meet up and catch up with such beautiful people. You can just feel the energy and giving-ness. If that’s a word. Gus Silber will be proud of me with my grammar and spelling. Oopps, sorry Gus, Microsoft now has a “Editor” feature which work 90% well, not like you: 100%.

After meeting catching up personally and business wise with Suzi, Joanne wanted to do some shopping. Nead-less to say we found nutting.

So we went to the local grocer, got our supplies for the POD, (in one basket) and headed there. A few Richard Scott margaritas and an early night. Like 8pm. A new record.

Saturday morning was lazy lazy lazy. Midday we did a 5km hike and then books books books. We promised each other we would get through 5 books each before New Year.

Somewhere on the top of a cliff in Plett. Taking a break.

Invest in your own knowledge.

Joanne and I reading two different books at the same time.

We both just enjoyed each others company while reading books and every now and again giving each other some guidance to what we had just learnt in our books. I am reading the Monk that sold his Ferrari (Robin Sharma) and Passing the Torch (Ilze Alberts). Me: “Hey Babe, the lady says that the 3rd Generation will spend all the money made by the 1st generation). Then Joanne will comment “the lady says that fathers have a different role to others. Mothers must be present and farther must just provide.”

Anyway, nonetheless, I always turn to one of my own quotes and that is: “whatever I say, take out the meat and throw away the bones.” I.E. In sharing advice, only certain points of advice will resonate with you.

I check my phone Sunday morning, and I said goodnight to the kids at 8'pm.

We lay in bed till 9am, knowing that we had to be out by 10am. Then Joanne made me some egg and mayo sandwiches for the road, and we were off.

We booked a so called “Cabin in the Woods” near Klein Brak as we were going to spend the evening with our dear friends Chris and Engela.

As life would have it, it was about 45minutes from them in the forest. And then we had to take Joanne's low fast BMW down a 10 minute 4 x 4 drive to the cabin.

Liza assured us the BMW will make it, and I trusted her. Joanne was getting more and more worried as we went down this very steep hill and then up and the bottom of the car going crunch. I assured her it was ok as Liza assured us. We arrived at 2pm and unpacked. I said to Joanne that it is not a good idea to go back on that road to visit Chris and Engela and come back again.

Richard Scott mode, I decided to ask our host if we can stay two nights as the pod was out of this world. Liza checked and it was available. Whooaaaaaaa.

A quick call to Chris and Engela to ask if it was ok to see them for lunch on the 24th and then a quick update to the kids.

So here I sit at a table in the middle of nowhere.

Somewhere remote typing to you right now.

Until next Sunday
