Richard Scott Blog: 25th September 2022

Monday morning I got out of bed, made Joanne coffee, saw her off to work, made a fire and got back into bed. Well on the couch bed. I got struck by a 24hr bug or sorts and obviously Joanne caught it 2 days later. I took some basic medicine and got going as I was not going to lie on the couch all day.

Richie popped in around 11am with the Ducati 999 number 1. He took the opportunity to take Ducati 999 number 2 for a ride and I took the opportunity to take some pictures. WOW they look so good.

Mid morning I got stuck into finishing off a large Graffiti piece on paper. It is for a collector in Cape Town. I so love doing this new style. I’m so done with the old chapter of my life. YES YES YES. Turn to the Auction houses for originals if your looking for one. Yeah, how many artists have the confidence to say that. Watch this space.

The rest of Monday went like this. Joanne got home, we cooked, we played cards, we went to bed early. Blah

Tuesday as you know is shop/gallery/town day. I took two prints with me to the gallery to sign. A collector bought Graffiti girls and DUSK, the most simple of all my prints.

Angelique popped in and asked me to write a message for a client who bought another small print. She picked up the first piece of paper and I drew on it. It was a reject small Blue Mandy I drew on the back of. Attention to detail. It’s the small things in life that grow in to big things.

I had lunch with Charl from Worldart at the new Italian restaurant, Scala. I popped into the gallery to see the current show by Jean Luc. I love his style, so simple and colourful.

I’ve decided to work on a project with Australian supermodel Abby Dowse. Angelique made contact pre-COVID and she was keen to get involved. So next week I will start the concepts and draft the plan.

As mentioned above, here is a nice picture of “I Love Me”, a new graffiti piece I completed for a collector this week.

Thursday and Friday I got stuck into finishing off the Richard Scott HOPE gin bottles as my Liquor License has been approved and I can soon start selling my gin, wine, beer and tequila.

Candy Candy was launched on Thursday with a 3 day special launch. I’ve decided to mix it up a bit. If you order yours today or tomorrow I will give you a complimentary set of Espresso or Cappuccino cups. Here is how you go about it:

Working hard

Friday afternoon, Katja, Angelina’s Friend sent me a picture of her putting my stickers up all over Amsterdam. So cool that she took some pictures and sent to me.

Saturday, Angelina had a cake sale to help raise funds for their dance school, Melanie’s School of Dance in Melkbosstrand. Joanne and I popped out and bought R100’s worth. They were yummy. We also popped out to get the weekly shopping and I immediately chopped up some chilli when we got home.

Garth Kitching, the Principal of Flamingo International School in Sowa Town, Botswana, sent me a wonderful message on Instagram. I asked him if i could share it with you. Here goes:

Good afternoon Richard my name is Garth Kitching.  I am speaking to you from the middle of nowhere we live in a little mining village called Sowa Town in the north of Botswana and it’s a little 2 by 1km mining township and I am the principle of the little school that is here and I look after all the minor children who come to our school.  I arrived here in the darkest days of COVID and one of the things that I can do is a little bit of painting and art.  I have never taught it before but I saw that the High School children here really needed something to keep them busy and so I started this little art group it was voluntary.  I started with my own materials that I had brought up and slowly but surely we have built up a little acrylic collection.

So we slowly built up our materials and now we got some acrylics and some canvasses and the same kids are still with me 3 years later and WE ARE DOING AN ART EXHIBITION!!  It is so exciting the community is excited about it.  Try and find Sowa Town on a map.  We did a selection of works of the 14 and 15 year olds. I have always been a great admirer of your work and I follow you on Instagram and I just wanted to send you a few pictures so you could see what the kids did. I hope you enjoy them.

So just so you know its just a club that I run on a Friday afternoon and its voluntary you can come it you want to if you don’t want to that’s also fine and I have about 13 children that join me every Friday afternoon.  The art session is supposed to be from 14h00 to 15h30 and I am very lucky if I can get away at 17h00/17h30 so I have to do these famous words “Picasso step away from your paintings” so put down your brushes and step away.

It is that kind of energy that I work with. It has been very rewarding.  The orange tree – he is a young student who is 12 years old and has just come into the high school and he is a lefty so he works with his left hand. It doesn’t look anything like one of your trees except the conceptual thinking is there.  I love that piece of work with all those different dots and that huge massive boulder falling out of that one branch.  I just enjoy them.  I have got more pictures just give me a yell if you want to see some more. Thank you with the beautiful work that you bless us with everyday and thank you that we can celebrate Richard Scott in our tiny little school.

I just want to send you one more antidote about this particular project that we are doing.  You can just imagine that this little exhibition that we are doing is 3 years worth of projects so there is a lot of different stuff that has been done and it has been amazing to watch the kids grow but when I showed them your work the were like “this is easy we can easily do this”.  It was like when we had the Busarwa Art up here they thought it was simple then I just sat back and thought they really had to come to terms with what it was to do one of these trees so yes we had a lot of conversations about it but it was not nearly a easy as they thought.

ENDS

I sent off a few small packages to collectors this week and I did the usual Richard Scott Packaging, branding it with my stickers and spray paint.

The kids came over Sunday for a Chicken Kebab lunch and then we just chilled. I’m gonna post this to you now and then Instagram the hell out of that offer for the complimentary Cappuccino or Espresso sets.

Angelique Spotted a Richard Scott Vespa on Friday in Camps Bay. It belongs to Mark Copeland. So cool to see them in the streets.

Until Next week, thanks for reading.

Monday was Easter and I learnt about “Luck and Risk” from the book I’m reading by Morgan Housel. It is a fascinating chapter where he describes how lucky Bill Gates was that he is where he is today. I thought...
