Monday was Easter and I learnt about “Luck and Risk” from the book I’m reading by Morgan Housel. It is a fascinating chapter where he describes how lucky Bill Gates was that he is where he is today. I thought it was 100% hard work, but apparently not. I will post the story at the bottom of the blog.
Nonetheless Monday was nice to chill and sit on the couch and read a book for a change. I had Sunday leftovers for lunch and supper as I did on Tuesday as well, while Joanne got stuck into the Pickled Fish. We made too much, but it was so worth it. We tried Joannes dad's recipe and it’s a winner. The secret ingredient is mustard powder. Who would of thought? Joanne dug out her dad’s old recipes and we discovered the secret ingredient.
Sunday sock day. Sent Angelina a photo of some socks she bought me yonks ago. See Dad does wear the crazy socks you bought me.
Been a while since I washed bikes. I used to wash and clean my bike daily at one point in my life.
Lazy Sunday afternoons.
Late Sunday night walk on the beach to see why the tide was acting up. The sea created lakes of water on the beach. We think it was due to the moon.
Tuesday was our first NON-WOODSTOCK-SHOP meeting. We decided to meet at the studio. It was very constructive. I decided to go back to an old style of weekly meeting. Maticulously going through all departments and areas like Galleries, Workflow, Invoices, Leads, Sales, Events, Projects, Deliveries etc.
Angelique and Chad getting stuck into the Government loaf.
If you know then you know.
Wednesday, I woke up with that crap feeling I wake up to now and again. I did go see the doctor a while back and did full blood tests to find nothing. I just got up and got on with it. A few Corenza's and a coffee and crack-on as they say in England.
I managed to get some work done in the studio and worked on those bathroom shelves and plumbing in two baths.
I was in the studio and I had this idea to use up the reject road work signs. It is a take on Willie Bester's work where he uses Road signs and puts an original artwork in the middle. Once completed I stood back and thought it was too close to Willie's work. So, I thought I’d check in with Joshua or even check in with Willie on a collaboration. Strange how an idea can come from something.
Joanne suggested to put a mirror inside the center and hung it up in the bathroom.
What are your thoughts? Send me an email to art@richardscott.com
Needs work.
Perhaps with the old Camera Men pieces form 2005.
Or Maybe the Ignatius Marx Colaboration piece.
Two Reject signs waiting.
Check out these cure little Richard Scott bags made by Nicola for the Backgammon pieces.
Thursday, I woke up with that washing machine flu feeling for the 2nd day in a row. We got up at 5.30am and showered and I saw Joanne off and then collapsed on the bed till 8am. It was better than most times I get that feeling.
I got up had something to eat and had a nice strong coffee and just got on with the day. I made a list of things to do before 12 which I managed to do. One of them was install the shelf for the bath taps in our bedroom. The bath has been out of action for about a year since the leak under the floor. It is a nice feeling when you do your own handyman stuff. Hendrik was tasked to varnish the shelf before we install it next week.
Then I was off to see Avron and have lunch. It has been ages since we had lunch. The main reason is probably that I don’t cycle anymore, or at least cycle like I used to in my Cape Epic days. I used to go see Avron once a week at least trading bikes and bike parts. It was great fun.
We caught up over a burger and a beer at Redemption at the Biscuit Mill. It used to be to be a tiny little burger bar the size of a garage. Nice to see good burger joints expanding. The burger was great 7/10. The two delicious onion rings on the top gave it an extra point to 8/10.
Godda love a good burger and a good catch up.
Then it was off back home.
Joanne was home before me. She had already dug into the last of the pickled fish for an early supper. I decided on ham and pickled chilly cabbage I made a while back. It was NOM NOM.
We were both a little under the weather so early night it was.
Friday, it was decided by the staff members that we would all meet in Stellenbosch. We as in Angelique, Chad, and myself. It was the first week without the shop in Woodstock, so we are finding our feet RE meetings and general workflow. I drove in with Joanne and jumped in the VW Caddy with Chad as Joanne needed the car later and I had several back to back meetings in Stellenbosch. First stop was Sophia’s for a catchup and a coffee.
Sofia made scrambled eggs just like my mom's. Wow, they were good.
Then we popped into Art and Wine Lounge boutique to see Anton and Elsje. It was nice to see the new space.
Pop in to see Anton and Elsje.
Then it was off to see Les at High Road Wine to chat about our co-lab. Les was running a tad late so we popped into Pane Vino to get some grappa. George does make good grappa.
One of my top 10 fav restaurants. Run by Eleanor and George.
Do you know where this is?
Chad dragged me into an old white house next to Les that had some really cool antiques and a book collection of note. I have been going to High Road and Pane Vino for years and never seen the place before.
Les arrived and we caught up. Always a laugh when Les is around. Then we strategized about that co-lab we did in December. There are a few bottles of the wine left.
After Les we popped into Kantien to see Bertus and drop of the Road sign artworks he ordered for his restaurant. Cant wait to see them on the walls. Pics to follow.
We decided to try the pizza as you know Bertus is a great chef. In fact, one of the top 3 in the country. Man, it was good. Better than good. We gave it a 9 1/2 out of 10. I asked Pamela, the waiter if Bertus uses pea flower to get the crust nice and course. She said nope, Bertus uses Millie Meal. Who would have thought? Off to the shops to buy some Millie Meal.
Messing about. Always get the pic.
Cool biker logos all over Bertus's restaurant. I discovered he has 8 Harleys. Whoaaaaaaa.
I saw this slogan sprayed on the bathroom wall. I remember when I first met Joanne and I did something cheesy, she would say "That's so Cheesy Richard Scott" Ha ha, I've won her over now with the inner kid in me and my Cheesy-ness.
We always buy 2 pizzas between the three of us on meeting day. I got to choose Margarita and Chad and Angelique did CHING-CHONG-CHA to see who got to choose the 2nd one.
Spot the Scott. Ha, I made the sticker wall. Nice one Jason. I see you did too.
Can you spot the Millie Meal? So well balance, it was delicious.
Then off back home.
Chad dropped me at home late afternoon. Joanne was having her hair done so she was not home yet.
I cracked open a beer and soaked the long week away.
Saturday morning was cool and crisp. You could feel the rain coming. Joanne and I decided to go for a long run on the beach before the wind picked up. Boy did we time it right.
The we potted around the house before we headed off to Chorus, Bertus’s flagship restaurant for a five hour lunch to celebrate Joanne's Birthday with the kids.
Whoaaa we were spoilt by Manager Albert and Chef Marcus. Albert also told us why its called Chorus. Overture was Bertus’s first restaurant that closed when the new owners of Hidden Valley Wines took over the space. So when Bertus moved to Waterkloof Wine Estate he named it after the parts of a song. First you get the beginning and then the Chorus and then, well we will have to see. So Chorus is named after the 2nd part of a song.
The Gang. We got to sit at the new big table.
It was very windy.
Albert doing his thing.
And again.
NOM NOM. Can you guess the ingredients?
Getting treated like a King and Queen
Chicken Ravioli with Prawn and a lot of other delicious things and a NOM NOM sauce.
Was so good, I had to lick the plate.
Drawing on the plate.
I opted for the Easter Egg for desert, which was the 6th course.
The view is so beautiful.
Saying goodbye to Albert and Marcus.
We had a great time and headed out in the blustering wind. We all made it home and reminisced on the day and all the different courses and experiences. It was another early night for Joanne and I while the kids sat around the fire and studied.
Sunday morning, we decided to get up early, go for a road run and go buy some goodies for the house. We were all done and back home by 10. There was no Sunday Lunch this weekend due to the big one at Chorus on Saturday. We did take out some nice Zuney Wagyu burgers for lunch that I bought in the week. We were also planning on a nice braai, so I took out a nice marbled sirloin on the bone that I ordered from them as well.
I lit a fire, Joanne made some food for the kids for Uni for the week, Angelina joined me at the table to work while I finished off the blog. I got a nice message from Richie to say he sold the one Ducati 999 for a great price. That was great news and he can now buy a car.
Okie dokie, I am gonna go cook them wagyu burgers and get Joanne to proofread the blog before I post it.
Until Next week.
