Richard Scott Blog: 28th August 2022
Monday was admin day. I did have to pop into town to Nedbank with Angelina to collect her new passport. It is very good of the banks to open their doors to assist Home Affairs. They are on time for appointments and their soft chairs, to us South African’s who have the worlds worst Home Affairs Department, is a breath of fresh air. I got to town 20 minutes early. The appointment was at 1pm at Nedbank in St Georges Mall, Cape Town. The reason for going in 20 minutes early is that Miriam’s Kitchen is in St Georges Mall and they make the best sandwiches in the world. A spicy Steak Masala and Chip sandwich. It has layers of tomato and lettuce and soft steak cooked in masala and topped with what we call in South Africa “slap chips”. I scoffed it as quick as I could, took a pic or two and headed to the bank with my tummy full and feeling satisfied. When I had my dot com business in the late 90’s all our staff were Muslim. I was the only Christian and religiously every Friday we would buy our staff a Steak Gatsby and Rooties and Toasted Steak Masala sandwiches.
Tuesday turned out to be a really warm day in Cape Town, considering the weather was miserable. The weather caught us all off guard, except those wearing layers and who checked the weather report. Joanne made us all Lentil pasta for lunch and it was so good Angelique was taking pictures to send to her boyfriend, Jan. Andre got some veggies and fruit at a good price from the market and I asked if I could get some. He gave me a whole load of food for R100.
After catching up with everyone and getting ready for spring, I picked Joanne up and we had an hour to kill so we did the WOK BAR again. We tried something different but there was too much rice for our liking so we decided we are going to stick to our usual but it was still yummy.

Angelique and I popped in to see Henry’s newest gallery at the bottom of Kloof Nek Road. Henry is opening his gallery on 1 September. We discussed installing a huge Richard Scott ROAD WORKS art piece smack bang in everyone’s view while they driving up Kloof Nek Road towards the Cable Car and Camps Bay.
Wednesday was house and admin day. Joanne sent me a picture from her office window and we were talking about where we were in the world. So I decided to send her close up and far away pictures of where I was in the world.
Hendrik and I got stuck into some fiber glassing. The one wall above Angelina’s bedroom outside on the deck had de-laminated. So we ground it out and sanded the wall down and re-applied G4. G4 is a bonding liquid between Fiberglass Resin and cement. After the G4 set we applied the matting and then the top coat. Always nice to fix your own home. Hendrik does most of the work.
I also experimented with some new Graffiti spray paint as the current supplier has run out. We did colour layering and fading on Zink Alume. All the paints act differently to each other and on different surfaces.
Wednesday afternoon, I popped to the hardware store in Melkbos. I love living in a small town because everyone in the hardware store form the owners, Clive and Nick to the assistants Anika and Junita all greet me by my first name when I walk in the door. After getting some supplies, I popped into the new Chinese shop, Aria Rose, across the road. Quite daunting to seeing Chinese shops pop up in your own little village but I believe in supporting up and coming businesses and I love Chinese food. I walked in and introduced myself. They come from Guangzhou in China. Quite canny because I’ve been there twice.
Thursday was supposed to be a town day with a visit to Henry’s new Sea Point Gallery and then lunch with Charl from Worldart, but I only got out of bed at 10.30 feeling ill. I crawled out of bed and had a nice cup of tea and a rusk. It made me feel a little better. I had admin to do as Thursday was the 25th (PAY DAY) and everyone gets a slice of the cake. I did all my printing and paying. I did make a nice warm fire first. I also go stuck into two of the 4 books I’m currently reading.
Friday, Joanne was working from home and we both got stuck into work. I got stuck into some Secondary Market research. Strauss&co have ME ME ME up for auction and on Friday afternoon it had reached R70 000. Saturday Afternoon R100 000. That’s so cool. The Secondary market Richard Scott engine is working. The auction closes Tuesday so get your bids in.
We were invite by Jacques to join him and have a glass of wine and mingle at the Hotel Promenade in Sea Point. We enjoyed a glass of Deetleft MCC and Wildekrans MCC which was delicious. Deetleft’s has the only White Pinotage MCC in the world, so I was told.
Afterwards we popped into see Andre at Woodstock brewery as he was hosting the South African band Prime Circle.
Saturday we got up early and did a early morning ROAD RUN. Afterwards we got on the road and going with our weekly shopping at Clicks and Checkers and the butcher to get some yummy meat from Joe at Table View Butcher. We got home around 2pm, unpacked and I put a fire on.
Chad popped over for a lamb chop braai and used the time to work on his assignment. After he left we had the house to ourselves and decided to watch a movie or two. Netflix is struggling I see with content. Time to switch I think.
Sunday morning we stayed in bed till 10am planning our October Klein Karoo road trip. I will let you know closer to the time but it goes like this: Melkbosstrand to Barrydale to Prince Alfred to Sutherland to Tulbach and back to Melkbos via all the small towns. We googled all the beautiful restaurants and things to do and places to visit in the Klein Karoo.
After creating an itinerary we got up and did our usual 5km beach run.
While we were running a rogue wave caught us off guard and I shouted out the word GONNAS. Joanne said to me “Where did that word come from?” So I said the same place the word JUS-LIKE-IT that you said yesterday came from LOL. It comes from us both being brought up in Afrikaans towns in our youth. So here’s a list and description of some words we’ve caught each other out using:
GONNAS– A word you use to bring quick attention to a potential threat
EK SE– Directly translated “I SAY” but its used at the end of a sentence to confirm and drive home your confidence in what you were talking about in sentence.
NOOIT– Never gonna happen. Often used with “EK SE” – NOOIT EK SE!
After the beach run, Joanne got the Chicken pieces in the oven for the Sunday Melkbos lunch. We use Alister King’s famous Chicken and Olive Back recipe but adapt to include an amazing Olive Caviar that we found in Kloovenberg, Riebeek Kasteel. It was delicious. I have decided that we are going to buy Alister some for him as a gift.
Richie popped in for lunch and we caught up on the current fuel saga we are having with FOH, our aeroplane.
After Richie left, I finished this blog and Joanne is in the kitchen again making banana bread. She never stops 🙂
