We went to bed real early Sunday night. Like 7.30pm. Joanne and I were both so exhausted but then Isaac Newton’s theory (every action has an equal and opposite reaction) kicked in and we both were wide awake at 4am. Blah.
Monday started off well as Joanne had her first day of no driving kids to school after 20 years of doing so i.e Dean drove himself to school. So Joanne and I got to hang out and drink coffee before Joanne headed to town. I got stuck into my daily routine of checking in with the kids and checking all my one million bank accounts. I then got stuck into my Monday list.
This is my weekly self-made diary/to to list that I use to keep myself in check.
Monday we got news that Overture Restaurant was closing down. Bertus Basson, a good friend couldn’t re-negotiate the lease as the new owners on the farm had their own ideas. We were devastated, but Bertus is happy to move on. Joanne and I met there as you know.
Tuesday, I drove in to town with Joanne and then headed to the shop in Woodstock. I caught up with Angelique and Chad and did all my delegating for the week. It’s winter and cold in Cape Town and the art world here works on seasons. We are therefore getting ready for September, Spring season, when the art world slowly comes to life like all the plants that are slowly picking themselves up and getting ready to grow grow grow and so the art world will go go go. Spring is coming, COVID is no more, the tourists are coming and even though we are in a recession, I can feel it coming.
After meeting Angelique, Chad and I jumped into the car and headed out to Hout Bay Gallery to meet John and finalize the ROAD WORK’s show. We got our favorite donuts from BUNS in the Biscuit mill in Woodstock. We all tucked in and Chad made the mistake of scoffing 3 as afterwards we went to Snookies and he was to full to order Fish and Chips.
After Snookies we popped into to see Mike at Vespa and discuss some Richard Scott Vespa Prints and then we headed back to the shop.
Wednesday we woke up to rain and it was awesome on the tin roof. Joanne got off early to work at 6.30am and I got stuck into my admin. I have decided to real in all art on loan and close off loose ends. Gee Whizz I didn’t realize how generous I am with all the art out there on loan.
On Wednesday I was looking for a painting from 2006 to do a valuation and I came across these old pictures of Richie helping me create splash paintings.
Wednesday afternoon I finished off a long TODO list and then finalized the new Seaside Village print just in time to go for my bi-annual oral hygienist clean. Strange fact, Karen, my hygienist was telling me Dentists have the highest suicide rate in the medical world. Well there is something I bet you didn’t know.
Oh, while searching for that painting from 2006 I came across an old Self Portrait I did. I considered painting in the style but only sold 2 works compared to my Thick Black Line – White subject style.
I also found some really cool old stuff I’d forgotten I did. I look back at these works now and cannot believe how time has flown. I have produced and sold over 4000 paintings and 2000+ prints. Here is a random selection form 2006. 16 Years ago. Where were you 16 years ago?
I even found the one and only male painting I have ever done. Over the years I have been asked to do men many times but have never experimented with that series. I am still to this day not happy with this work. I think I could of done better.
Thursday was back in the shop in Woodstock with a few errands to run.
Friday was a great day. We got news form the lawyers that the liquor license
has been approved. YEAHHHHHHHHHH. Now I must set up the shop accordingly. Watch this space.
I used the Vespa on Friday as I was using to much petrol in the BMW. Early
morning, I had a great session with Nadia at therapy. We discussed the conflict
playground and the three roles: Perpetrator, the Victim and the Rescuer. It’s
quite fascinating to learn and make changes to your behaviors to make yourself
better. Friday afternoon I filled the Vespa up with Petrol. I was shocked as it
cost me R169 compared to my usual fill up of R100.
I also received my Certificate from The University of Cape Town on Friday. Now I need to find a frame and frame it and hang it above my desk like my doctor and dentist. LOL
Saturday morning, I got up early to see Angelina off to dance. She had a practice at Artscape. Joanne and I did a 2.4km road run and then had a nice breakfast. Scrambled egg with parsley, grilled chorizo and baby tomatoes. Ah it was so yummy. Afterwards we cleaned up house and I made Angelina and myself some chicken mayo on thinly sliced rye for lunch. I put some finely cut lettuce on mine as it reminds me of being a kid in Benoni and having a toasted ham sandwich at the Golden Egg at the Benoni Plaza. Remember those days.
Yum yum lettuce garnish on my Chicken and Mayo on Rye. The rye comes from Tamboerswinkel in Gardens Cape Town
As I type this on Saturday afternoon, Mike Miles sends me this pic:
Mike and his family popped into the Road Works show last week and his son stuck this sticker onto his G-STAR RAW jacket
Angelina stayed over Saturday night and we got in another early night. We watched the rest of a crap horror movie called First House on the Left. We woke up early Sunday morning and planned our Karoo Road trip. We have booked at Barrydale for one night and then the Hotel in Price Alfred. I’m about to book The Hex Huis in Sutherland for a night. Any suggestions where to stay on the last night. Somewhere between Sutherland and Melkbosstrand. After booking the two nights we went for a run on the beach. We managed 4.8km today.
I got a few extra Road Work signs in this week at the shop in Woodstock and decided to take a few cool pictures with the Porn Star mirror cabinet I have.
Sunday lunch with the kids went well. We had full attendance today. Joanne and I made Vetkoek and Curry Mince. We had beef mince and Joanne also made Lental curry for the veggies in the house.
Vetkoek is a traditional South African meal made from yeast bread dough that is deep fried and stuffed with curry mince. Vetkoek forms part of South African cuisine culture. The vetkoek literally means fat cake in Afrikaans. Vetkoek looks like a fried bread roll or a sugar donut that has been deep fried. Once fried you cut a hole in it and remove the inside and stuff it with curried mince. In South Africa we also have the Curry Bunny Chow which is the same but using a whole loaf of Government Issue bread. Vetkoek is mostly cooked at home, but can be found at street corner styled restaurants.
Until next week.
Richard
